FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS
EURASLIC 11
Open Waters - Open Sources
4-6th May 2005, Hotel Marjan, Split, Croatia
EURASLIC - the European Association of Aquatic Sciences Libraries and Information Centres - is an independent, non-profit European interest group and a regional group of IAMSLIC - the International Association of Aquatic and Marine Science Libraries and Information Centres.
EURASLIC Conferences are held every two years. The Conference brings together librarians and information specialists from aquatic libraries in research centres, universities, goverment agencies and the private sector in Europe and from countries in bordering regions, as well as representatives of international organisations. The Conference provides a valuable opportunity for the exchange of ideas and expertise, and experiences in the dissemination of the relevant information in that field.
This 11th Biennal EURASLIC Conference will be held in Split, Croatia from May 4-6, 2005. The Conference Hosts are the Ruđer Bo±ković Institute and the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries. The primary venue will be the Hotel Marjan, however the Workshop will take place at the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries. The focus of this Conference will be OPEN ACCESS. In addition there will be country reports, discussion sessions, commercial presentations, exhibits and plenary and board meetings.
You are invited to participate and to submit papers, reports and posters.
CONFERENCE TOPIC: Open Access, Open Archives and Open Sources for the Aquatic Sciences
The Internet is changing the way of publishing. Dissemination of information
is getting easier and the number of electronic journals is growing rapidly.
In these conditions, the sea of information should promise a smooth sailing
for the users, and yet this is not the case. Journal prices are higher
than ever and at the same time libraries are being forced to cut their
budgets. The business model offered by publishers dominates the market,
however alternatives such as the open access model are starting to gain
importance. Only the future will show which model will prevail. The 11th
EURASLIC Conference will present and discuss open access models, highlighting
achievements to date in this domain.
Proposed Discussion Sessions:
ECET - European Countries in Economic Transition
MedSIG - Mediterranean Interest Group
Freshwater Libraries Group
Proposal for an IOC funded European Information Network - ODIN Europe
Workshop
A skills workshop will take place during the Conference at the Institute
of Oceanography and Fisheries (Split). The specific topic to be announced.
Regional, Country, Institution and Library Reports
A regular feature of Euraslic Conferences are the reports provided by
National Representatives. These reports are included in the published
Proceedings and provide a valuable ongoing record of advances in aquatic
information provision in Europe.
Commercial Presentations
Euraslic encourages library and information centre suppliers to attend
and exhibit at Conference, and time is set aside for representatives of
commercial organisations to present their products.
